Where to stay in Kraków

For a Wieliczka Salt Mine trip you have three bases: the Old Town, Kazimierz and the town of Wieliczka. The first two put you in Kraków, with the SKA1 train to the mine taking about 25 minutes from Kraków Główny. The third puts you next to the mine itself. This page compares them for visitors, and it names no hotels.

For most visitors who come mainly for the city and add the mine as a half-day trip, the Old Town or Kazimierz is the better base. Stay in Wieliczka if the mine is the main reason for the trip. Book the visit itself on the Wieliczka Salt Mine tickets page, or compare trips from Kraków.

For most visitors who want to see Kraków and the mine, the Old Town or Kazimierz with the train is the simplest set-up. The Old Town and Kazimierz are different sides of the city, so decide which sights you want to walk to.

Old Town, Kazimierz or Wieliczka

What each choice means in practice.

Old Town

The historic centre grew from a medieval trading town. The Main Square, the Cloth Hall and Wawel are the sights most visitors plan around. See things to do in Kraków for what each area offers and what Wawel costs in 2026.

Kazimierz

Kazimierz lies in the southern part of the city, and is known for its old synagogues. Choose it if the Jewish heritage of the city is a main reason for your trip.

Wieliczka

The town has the train link to Kraków Główny and the mine's two shafts. The tourist route starts at the Daniłowicz shaft, ul. Daniłowicza 10, and the Miners' Route at the Regis shaft, pl. Kościuszki 9. Check your address against the shaft you need. See how to get to Wieliczka for stops and car parks.

What to check before you book

Questions that the map answers better than a listing.

The way to the station

The train starts at Kraków Główny. Check how long it takes from your address to the station, and plan the time on top of the 25 minutes of the ride.

Parking

If you drive, ask the accommodation about parking. At the mine the Daniłowicz car park costs PLN 40 per day for a car in 2026, and it is not a free overnight space.

An early start

For the Miners' Route you need to be at the shaft at least 15 minutes before the start. Count back from the start time when you choose where to sleep.

A day with Auschwitz-Birkenau

If you pair the mine with the memorial, both trips start from Kraków in practice. Read Auschwitz and Wieliczka from Kraków before you fix your base.

Staying in the mine itself

A separate product, not part of a normal ticket.

The mine offers separately bookable stays of 1 to 3 or 4 to 21 days in a health-resort area on level III, 135 m underground, with the entrance at Regis. The temperature there is 13 to 14.5 °C. You bring your own food, there is no Wi-Fi, and an early return to the surface is not possible. Tourist routes cost extra. Nothing here is a medical claim. Read about the underground museum and the spa area on the inside the mine page.

Where to stay: frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Kraków or in Wieliczka?

If you come mainly for the city, stay in Kraków and take the train. If the mine is the main reason, Wieliczka puts you close to the shafts. Check your exact address either way.

Which area of Kraków suits the mine?

Both the Old Town and Kazimierz work, because the train starts at Kraków Główny. Choose by the sights you want to walk to, and check the way from the address to the station.

How long is the train from Kraków to the mine?

About 25 minutes from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia on the SKA1 line. A single ticket at the full fare costs PLN 7.50 in 2026.

Can I sleep in the mine?

Only through the mine's separate stays of 1 to 3 or 4 to 21 days in the health-resort area. A normal ticket does not include accommodation.

Is this the official site of the mine?

No. This is an independent visitor guide, and it does not take hotel bookings.
